A night in the Western Desert
The White Desert is a national park of wind-carved chalk shapes rising from the sand, about five hours from Cairo by road and 4×4. Camping there overnight, with a fire, dinner and a sky full of stars, is one of the most memorable things you can do in Egypt.
The route
The road to Bahariya Oasis, then by 4×4 through the Black Desert with its volcanic hills, Crystal Mountain and the Agabat valley, arriving at the White Desert for sunset.
The camp
A simple Bedouin-style camp with mattresses, blankets and a windbreak, with dinner cooked over the fire. It is basic, not a hotel.
Good to know
Desert nights are cold in winter, so bring warm layers. We can extend this to three days with a second night or a visit to Bawiti.
