Fayoum Oasis Day Tour: Wadi El Rayan and the Valley of the Whales – Tour Details
Desert, lakes and fossils
Fayoum is a green oasis about two hours from Cairo. Beyond it, Wadi El Rayan has two desert lakes joined by small waterfalls, and Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the skeletons of ancient whales lie in the sand.
Valley of the Whales
The fossils are around 40 million years old and show whales that still had small hind legs. A marked trail runs between them, with a small open-air museum at the start.
Tunis village and Lake Qarun
On the way back, Tunis village is known for its pottery workshops, overlooking Lake Qarun.
Good to know
The final stretch to Wadi El Hitan is a desert track, so we use a 4×4 for that part. Bring sun protection and water.
