Egypt Land Tours: How to See Cairo, Luxor and Aswan Without a Cruise

A Nile cruise is the classic way to see Upper Egypt, and for most travellers it is the right one. But not for everyone. Some people get restless on a boat after the first day. Some have fixed dates that do not match cruise departures. Some want a particular hotel, or more time in Cairo, or a trip to Abu Simbel that a short cruise does not include. For them, a land tour covers the same great sites by train, car and domestic flight, with hotel nights instead of a cabin.

We compared the two styles in Nile Cruise vs Land Tour. This guide is the practical next step: how an Egypt land tour actually works, how long you need, and which route suits which trip.

The three ways to travel south

Every land tour has to get you from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan, around 650 to 900 kilometres to the south. There are three ways to do it.

  • Domestic flights take about an hour and save the most time. They suit short trips and travellers who want hotels throughout.
  • The overnight sleeper train runs between Cairo and Aswan, with private sleeping compartments. It is simple rather than luxurious, but it saves a hotel night and a flight, and many travellers remember it fondly. Our guide to flights vs the sleeper train compares the two in detail.
  • By road is the only sensible way between Luxor and Aswan if you are not on a cruise, because it lets you stop at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way, exactly as a cruise would.

How many days do you need?

A land tour can be as short or as long as you like, but these are the lengths that work best.

What you gain, and what you give up

The biggest gain is control. You choose your hotels, your pace and the order of the trip, and you can add places a short cruise skips, such as Abu Simbel, Dendera and Abydos, or a second day on Luxor’s West Bank. Days in Cairo are easier to extend, too.

What you give up is the river itself. A cruise turns the journey between Luxor and Aswan into part of the holiday: slow afternoons on the sun deck, villages and palm groves sliding past, and no packing between stops. On a land tour that stretch is a four-hour drive, broken by Edfu and Kom Ombo. That is why some travellers do both: a land tour in Cairo, then a short cruise in the south. Our tour packages with a Nile cruise are built that way.

The Luxor to Aswan drive

This is the leg that makes a land tour feel complete. A private car with a guide takes you from one city to the other, around four hours of driving in total, with stops at the Temple of Horus at Edfu, the most complete temple in Egypt, and the double temple of Kom Ombo on a bend of the Nile. Your luggage travels with you, so it doubles as your transfer day. See Luxor to Aswan by Road with Edfu and Kom Ombo, and our guides to Edfu and Kom Ombo.

Tips for planning a land tour

  • Fly the long legs, drive the short ones. Cairo to Luxor or Aswan by air or sleeper train; Luxor to Aswan by road.
  • Fly into one city and out of another. Starting in Luxor and finishing in Cairo, or the reverse, saves a day of backtracking.
  • Book Abu Simbel early if your dates fall around 22 February or 22 October, when the sun reaches the inner sanctuary and the site is very busy.
  • Leave a buffer day before your international flight home.

All of our land tours are private, built to your dates and quoted on request. Browse the full list of Egypt land tours, or tell us what you have in mind and we will suggest a route.
